Kudos to Cross-Country!

Dear Mr. Murphy:

I think it is important that you know what your students are doing on their trip to California.

I was tired and hungry when I stopped at Panda Express for supper. The line for service was moving slowly. Next thing I know, five or six high school students came and got in line. In a few minutes, more came; and then more.

I silently rolled my eyes knowing full well how exuberant 13-18 year old students can be when in groups. I also began to look around the room to see where I would be likely to find a seat, if they should start landing at the tables even before they got their meals.

As a retired school teacher, counselor and administrator, I was preparing for the worst and hoping for “not too bad”.

Well, sir, I am delighted to tell you that I was overwhelmingly surprised and pleased. Not only were they well mannered as they waited patiently in line, in addition, they sat down and ate their meals like normal human beings. They were smiling and happy without being boisterous or obnoxious. The girls who sat at the table across from me were pleasant to observe. I am accustomed to the body language of gossip. Instead I saw friendly interaction.

It was a little while before I even noticed that their vocabulary was the kind one would like to hear all the time. Not only was there no profanity, they actually spoke plain English.

Not only that, but they talked to each other without the constant interruption of text messages.

When I finally asked where they were from, they pleasantly told me they were from Timpanogos High School in Utah and they were the cross country team here for a track meet on Saturday.

Let me assure you that it doesn’t really matter how they do in the track meet, they are all winners already. Each of them has taken advantage of positive parental guidance as well as church and school training to become fine young ladies and gentlemen.

Be proud of your young people: You have a right to be.

THS the BEST (Staffulty)

Check out our fantabulous faculty & staff!

Cindy Grimm is the Timpanogos High School Employee of the Year. Cindy works in our library and is such a fantastic addition to our school. Accolades from all over the building were given to Cindy today. She's made such an addition to our school, works on many committees, including the School Improvement Committee with data, and was a huge part CRT testing last year. We're so lucky to have Cindy at our school!

Kori Crampton has worked at THS for the past 14 years. She's a huge asset to the English department and a perpetual student favorite. She's on the flex committee, served as the junior class adviser last year, and as Donalee Eisenhart said today, "The nicest person ever."
Her students will tell you they adore her costumes, projects, and scintillating classroom instruction. She pushes kids to do their best through her adoration of them, believing in them, and believing that every child can do what she asks them. She sincerely believes in every child. Her absolute faith in the ability of students is the power of Kori Crampton.

Dance Break! "Tonight's Gonna
Be a Good Night"
Today, the teachers went to UVU to celebrate
"Standing Together" and another 5 years. We rode two big yellow school busses, and the faculty did some dances (see Michelle Larsen get down to some Black Eyed Peas). We also were greeted by friendly students from StuCo and cheer. It's great to see familiar faces at the doors. You ROCK T-wolves!

School is starting!

School is starting soon, and THS is getting all spruced up for students. There's a smell of new paint in the halls, a fresh coat of wax on the floors, and new students wandering about. Teachers are excited to see students, and a general sense of excitement fills the air.

Just to get you excited, the girl's soccer team is already playing! Here's a great link to the game played Tuesday in South Jordan.

We can't wait to see you again!

Timpanogos Summer Coaches Summit 2011

On Thursday, July 21st, the second annual THS head coaches summit was held followed by a golf tournament at Sleepy Ridge. The purpose of the summit was to discuss the essential components of high performing teams and to continue to strengthen our shared mission and vision while building unity among the coaching staff.
Last year the coaches developed the following mission statement:
Timpanogos High School athletics will provide opportunities for athletic participation in a competitive and wholesome environment while emphasizing excellence in academics, performance, and character.
This year Principal,Theron Murphy spoke on the three components of our mission statement: academics, performance and character. Basketball coach, Nate Crandall described his vision for THS basketball and how we can best market our teams. Assistant principal, Deb Zirbes discussed multi sport participation vs specialization and the need to educate athletes and parents on the benefits of playing multiple sports.  State Champion girls soccer coach, Natalyn Lewis spoke on the components of a championship team then Athletic director, Frank Bramall led a team building activity followed by a session on how to mentor assistant coaches. Four-time State Baseball and golf coach, Kim Nelson presented on the importance of parent meetings and effectively utilizing booster clubs.
After lunch, Bell Photography took a photo of the group and then we headed to Sleepy Ridge for nine holes of golf. It was a great and successful day of professional development and camaraderie. We want to thank our sponsors, Jim and Tanna Evans and Brad and Vicki Jackman for helping to make our coaching summit possible.

Student Leadership Retreat 2011

Every year for the past three years, as a leadership coalition, we (Student Council, PACK, and Latinos in Action) head to Park City to have fun, discuss our fundamental purpose (mission and vision), and build capacity.

We began our retreat with a trip to Olympic Park. We had a great time and enjoyed the zip line and slide. We then returned the hotel and began breaking-down the THS student leadership mission statement: Inspire the one, Become one Timpanogos. The first part of the statement, “Inspire the One,” mean s that as leaders we have the responsibility to reach out and positively influence as many students as possible. We also felt it was critical to do the little things: lead by example, and make our interactions personal. The second part, “Become one Timpanogos,” means we all work to unify our student body.

We then proceeded to review our vision statement: We see a school where being a T-wolf is an honor, because students are valued for who they are, and where everyone is seen as someone. We envision Timpanogos with happy, united, involved, passionate, and successful students. We see a school where everyone is seen for who they are, as they are.

Former Miss Utah, Whitney Merrifield, then led us in an exercise called Challenge Day. Its purpose was to help us see the importance of breaking through barriers and stereotypes; encouraging us to be accepting and non-judgmental of all students

More leadership training continued which led us to the development of collective commitments that will guide our attitudes and behavior throughout the year. We came up with the following commitments:

1. We will not talk negatively. Respect
2. We will be sincere and humble in all our doings. Sincerity
3. We will be open-minded. Humility
4. We will acknowledge and respect others and their accomplishments. Compassion
5. We will recognize our mistakes and be responsible for our actions. Integrity
6. We will keep our commitments to each other. Loyalty
7. We will take initiative and not wait to be asked. Responsibility
8. We will be where we are supposed to be, when we’re supposed to be there, doing what we’re supposed to be doing. Reliability
9. We will make every day a great day to be a T-wolf! Honor

We concluded our retreat with our traditional leadership spirit bowl. We look forward to a great year as we plan activities and serve our peers.

Do not go where the path may lead...

Each year as graduation approaches, a new theme is selected for graduation, speeches are spoken, tassels are moved from one side to the other of the mortar board, and students move to alumnus. Ritual becomes rite of passage into adulthood, like shoes are traded for flip-flops of summer.

School's out for summer, and for some of you, Timpanogos High is permanently in your rear view mirror.

The quote on your graduation program this year was "Don't ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive and go and do it. Because what the world needs are people who have come alive." by Howard Thurman

That same idea has been expressed by many leaders. John F. Kennedy said "let us begin..." this journey. You can watch it here. The idea is exactly the same. Come alive! Find your passion!

Martin Luther King, Jr. expressed it as his dream. I know you're familiar with that speech.

Henry David Thoreau best expressed this by saying that "The price of anything is the amount of life you exchange for it."

One of my most favorite quotes chosen for graduation is by Ralph Waldo Emerson: "Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail." Of course this is what the quote chosen on the program means. What your teachers, parents, and friends want is for you to be is what your ring tone says: "Rockstar," "Billionaire," "Firework." We are the greatest fans of your life.

The world is waiting for you: What the world needs most is someone who knows how to blaze across the sky. "Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.

Blaze on, class of 2011. Blaze ahead.
